BioGuard Mineral Springs Stain and Scale protects the most expensive component in a salt pool: the chlorine generator cell. It's one of two products needed to convert an ordinary salt pool into a Mineral Springs pool, and it's applied once a season at start-up.

Scale is the defining maintenance problem of salt systems, and it hits the generator cell hardest. The cell works by passing current through saltwater across metal plates — and those plates are exactly where dissolved calcium and minerals precipitate first. A scaled cell produces less chlorine for the same run time, forces the system to work harder, and eventually stops performing altogether. Replacement cells are among the costliest parts in the equipment pad.

The reason salt pools scale so readily comes down to two things happening at once. The cell generates heat and turbulence right at the plate surface, which is where minerals come out of solution most easily. And salt systems drive pH steadily upward as they operate, because the cell aerates the water — and higher pH means calcium is far more likely to precipitate. Left alone, a salt pool builds scale faster than a conventionally chlorinated one.

Stain and Scale addresses both the deposit and the discoloration. It protects the generator cell, plumbing, and other equipment from scale accumulation, keeps the cell working at optimum performance, and guards pool surfaces against mineral staining.

It's a once-a-season product applied at start-up, paired with weekly Mineral Springs Renewal through the swim season. One quart treats 5,000 gallons.

Pro Tip: Calculate your total before ordering — the rate is heavier than most pool products. At 1 quart per 5,000 gallons, a 15,000-gallon pool needs three bottles and a 20,000-gallon pool needs four for a single seasonal treatment. That's a real annual line item, and it's worth weighing against what it protects: a replacement generator cell typically runs several hundred dollars and a scaled cell also wastes electricity producing less chlorine per hour of run time. The math generally favors the treatment, but you should go in knowing the number rather than discovering it at checkout.
